- 5/8-inch wood screws
- 1-inch wood screws
- 2-inch screws
- 1 handle
- 1 sheet of 1/2-inch 4-by-8 foot smooth-finish plywood
- 2 hinges
- Circular saw
- Measuring tape
- Sander
- Screwdriver
- Stud finder
- Wood paint or stain
- Using the circular saw, cut two 1 1/2-by-3 foot pieces from the plywood for the sides of the cabinet.
- And then cut out a top and bottom piece. Each one is 1 1/2 inches by 2 feet.
- You can now cut out two 2-by-3 foot pieces. One is the door and one is the back for the cabinet.
- If you want to cut out shelves, cut each one is 1 foot, 4 inches by 1 foot, 11 inches.
- Smooth all rough edges off the cut pieces using a sander.
- You can put some wood stain or paint if you want. Be sure to let it dry.
Assembling
- Get the cut out top and bottom pieces and place them on their edge with the 2-foot sides down and 3 feet apart. Form a 2-by-3 foot rectangular frame by putting the two side pieces in between. Screw all the way through both ends of the top and bottom into the sides by attaching the frame together by driving three 1-inch screws.
- Place a 2-by-3 foot piece over the frame. Attach it by driving a 1-inch screw down through it every 6 inches around the edges into the frame.
- Once you are done with that, you can now stand your cabinet and install any shelves if you want. Position them snuggly against the back of the cabinet, and drive two 1-inch screws through the sides of the cabinet into each shelf.
- Connect two hinges on one 3-foot side of the door. Screw half of both hinges to the 1/2-inch edge 3 inches inwards from the shorter ends. The hinge portion should face the front side of the door and screw the remaining half of the hinges to the cabinet.
- Screw a handle on the door. Voilà! Your new-fangled storage cabinets are finished.
- If you want to hang the cabinet, you can use the stud finder to find a wall stud. Drive a 2-inch screw through the inside back of the cabinet into the stud. Position the screw 6 inches down from the top of the cabinet in the center. Drive another screw through the back 6 inches up from the bottom.
